Judging by the crowd on hand at the Metroplex in Liberty Township, I think it's safe to say that boxing still has plenty of fans in the Youngstown area and the Mahoning Valley might have a new go-to venue for hosting shows.
The man who many in attendance were on hand to see was 31-year-old heavyweight Rocco Nolfi who was making his pro debut.
While Nolfi seemed to dictate the action and control the range with his jab over the course of the four-round bout, the judges scored the bout much differently than those in attendance as Davmond Carter (1-1-1) of Buffalo and Nolfi (0-0-1) fought to a split draw in the evening's main event.
While the judges were not kind to Nolfi, they redeemed themselves when they awarded Danny Rosenberger, 29, who shook off a slow start to outwork East Lansing, MI native Kevin Shacks in a six-round welterweight matchup a unanimous decision.
With the victory, Rosenberger who was fighting for the third time in 2019 improved his record 5-7-4 while the 28-year-old Shacks saw his record slip to 3-3-3 and suffer a defeat for the first time in six matches.
In what was the most entertaining pro bout of the evening, 20-year-old Dayton native Samuel Widenhaus was able to stand up to a strong opening round from Youngstown native John Gregory who used his speed to smother the young fighter.
Midway through the second round, Widenhaus was able to use his size and endurance to wear down the 33-year-old who was able to stay on his feet for the remainder of the bout despite absorbing some hard shots from Widenhaus.
While Youngstown went 1-1-1 on the pro side of the card, the amateurs from the Mahoning Valley had a strong showing led by Hanoverton native and current YSU student Drew Smith of Burnside Boxing Club who showed his superior endurance in outworking Marlon Johnson of Toledo and scoring the decision.
Also, scoring victories from the area were a pair of fighters out of Southside Boxing Club in Abraham Becerill who won his debut over Naples, Florida native Leo Chaves by capitalizing on a strong start and 15-year-old Tyrell Richards who improved his amateur record to 2-0 with a decision victory over Brian Garcia of Naples, Florida.
Also scoring a victory from the area was heavyweight Andre Henderson from Downtown Boxing Club who scored a close decision victory over Alex Harrison of Pittsburgh in what was one of the most entertaining amateur bouts of the evening.
