Sims Notches Victory on Lights Out Management Promoted Amateur Event

Brian Sims
Amateur boxing returned to the Mahoning Valley for the first time since July as the Ukrainian Hall located on Youngstown's west side hosted the Lights Out Management promoted card billed as Defending the Foundation, a 10-bout event to support the Joe "Red" Mazzocca Kidney Foundation.

Brian Sims of Euclid who currently calls Youngstown home while he attends Youngstown State University, kept up the with defending theme as crafty 24-year-old from the Downtown Boxing Club stable defended Youngstown's pride in the evening's main event.

While the two previous Youngstown based fighters were defeated by decision, it was Sims who put the city on his back and scored a convincing decision over Pittsburgh native Paul Palumbo in a 160-pound matchup.

"I didn't feel any pressure", said Sims when asked if he felt any knowing that Youngstown's reputation rested on his shoulders.  "I've learned time and time again through losses and wins that if you just do you and work hard in training camp you will be successful".

Though Sims often looked like poetry in motion in the ring last night, he jokingly admitted that Palumbo did provide one challenge for him.

"The fact that he was a southpaw and his height provided some challenge for me but other than that nothing about him provided a challenge for me".

With the victory, Sims who earned the Fight of the Night award upped his amateur record to 16-8 while Palumbo saw his record fall to 12-6.

Other local fighters in action included Ursuline freshman Jacorian Dent of Southside Boxing Club who dropped a hard-fought decision against Jamar Bowman Jr. of Cleveland in a 90-pound fight.

Dent and Bowman Jr. were both able to control the fight at times but Bowman Jr. did enough to take the decision and improve his record to 11-13.

Jake Lester of Downtown Boxing Club fought hard in his debut but fell to Teal Mathis of Akron in a 170-pound matchup as Mathis was able to stay unbeaten and improve his record to 4-0.
