Matt Conway will look to close out his summer like he started it, with a belt around his waist as the Pittsburgh native who recently turned 23-years-old will be defending the title he won in early June.
Conway (13-0, 5 KOs), won the then-vacant IBA Intercontinental Lightweight title with a split decision victory over Arturo Santos Reyes of Mexico in a highly entertaining contest at The Rivers Casino on June 8.
Trained by his dad, Jack with the help of trainers Sammy Vasquez and Steve "Skeetz" Levandowsky at the Bronson House Gym in Washington, PA, Conway knows defending the belt will be as tough as winning it.
"It means a lot to defend this belt," said Conway. "The training camp leading up the fight was long and hard so I'm putting just much effort if not more into this title defense".
Standing in the way between Conway and a successful title defense this upcoming Saturday in the scheduled 10-round main event of the Made Men Promotions show billed as Rivers Rumble X will 34-year-old Adriano Ramirez (10-1, 6 KOs) of the Dominican Republic.
Though Ramirez will present a solid challenge to Conway and his steady climb towards the lightweight rankings, the hometown favorite who is known as "Sweet Child" will have plenty of fans in his corner at the Rivers Casino outdoor amphitheater located in his hometown of Pittsburgh.
"I'll go out and people will see me and just be like hey you're that boxer so I love it," said Conway with a laugh of his rising popularity and becoming a role model. "I do my best to always do the right thing and work hard and be a role model for the kids in the gym and everyone else".
Tickets for the event can be purchased here through Thursday.
First bell is slated for 7:00 PM with the doors opening at 5:00 PM.
